Monument “France”

author

Antoine Bourdelle

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: Briancon (France).

The bronze statue is one of several castings of Bourdelle’s work. After the war of 1914-1918, a project of creation of a sculpture dedicated to US participation in these events was conceived. The monument was to be placed in Pointe de Grave, where the landing took place in 1917. The colossal statue representing France that was waiting for help, peers into the horizon, which is expressed by a characteristic gesture of the hand. Bourdelle based his plan on the image of Athena the warrior, whose attributes are a spear, helmet and shield, but then refused the last detail. Subsequently, this figure was used almost unchanged to create the monument “Free France”. Bourdelle considered this composition his greatest masterpiece.
