Antoine Bourdelle

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The square in front of the Olympi de Gouges Theater, Montauban (France).

Bourdelle first worked on this composition in 1887, then reworked it in 1924, significantly increasing its scale. Both versions, including the bronze copy, were exhibited at Pavillon du Livre. The ancient Greek poetess from the island of Lesvos is presented in a romantic style – she sits with her head bowed, in deep thought. A harp serves as the background for the figure. Adding his monogram to the final version, A. Bourdelle set the dates “1887-1925”. This bronze work stands in the square in front of the Montauban Theater. The plaster version is at the Musée Bourdelle.
