Monument to Adam Mickiewicz

author

Antoine Bourdelle

description

Location: Jardin d’Arvan square, Paris (France).

Bourdelle worked on this project with joy – he admired the Polish great poet and patriot, who lived in exile in Paris and taught at the College de France. In 1910, the sculptor was able to show the sketch “Mickiewicz’s Head” at the Salon. However, another 18 years passed before the monument was opened. Mickiewicz’s figure stands on a column, at the base of which there are bas-reliefs depicting images from the works of the singer of Polish national freedom. The monument also includes an allegory of the tormenting history of Poland, divided into parts by Russia, Austria and Prussia – it is allegorically shown in the image of three girls. The fragment “Grazhina”, which has become independent, is exhibited at the Bourdelle Museum.
