The Drinker

author

Umberto Boccioni

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The City Gallery of Modern Art (Milan).

The image of a man drinking wine is one of the most static paintings of the artist, in which the study of the volumes and design of objects occurs with the help of colour and local geometric shapes. Here we see echoes of the works of Cezanne, whom Boccioni sincerely admired. The seated person is depicted in a simplified manner characteristic of the author, his proportions do not correspond to the real ones, and his facial features are distorted. Despite the lack of prospects and the maximum simplification of forms, Boccioni managed to convey the mood of a person drowning his grief in wine with fantastic accuracy.
