The City by the Sea

author

Gösta Adrian-Nilsson

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art, Stockholm (Sweden).

The work is distinguished by light colours, not characteristic of the artist in the 1910s. Also, the urban landscape, despite the people walking along the streets, is quite static. This is just a view from above and into the distance, but without keeping the scale (for example, people in the background are larger than trees) and the traditional perspective. The house in the foreground is given in section and does not have a roof – you can see the room where members of an ordinary family do usual evening activities. The bustle of the city, even the movement of a freight train along a neighbouring street, do not penetrate into this cosy and isolated world.
