Varvara Stepanova

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow (Russia).

The early creative heyday of Varvara Stepanova embodied, in addition to visual poetry, in a series of pictorial and graphic compositions “Figures”. This cycle is characterized by an acute and rhythmic, as if “dancing” dynamics of the poses of the depicted characters. Fancifully playful figures consist of anarchistically elemental geometric irregular shapes and look like separate sculptures fixed in active movement on a white background. The conventionality of the depiction of a human body characteristic of Cubism and Futurism is the main feature of the author’s figurative painting.
