Billiard Players

author

Varvara Stepanova

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, Madrid (Spain).

V. Stepanova is mainly appreciated for her interpretation of constructivist aesthetics. However, the artist was not a student of Tatlin or Rodchenko, since her artistic profile was very different from the almost wholly abstract compositions of the “fathers” of Constructivism. She was not particularly attracted to pointless painting, did not consider photography as a replacement for painting and did not examine three-dimensional and architectural designs. The picture of billiard players from the “Figures” series can be attributed to the style of cubo-futurism. In the future, the artist did not ignore objectivity in her easel work.
