Composition in Red

author

Varvara Stepanova

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The State Regional Art Museum of Irkutsk (Russia).

This cubo-futuristic composition refers to the everyday plot genre of painting. Despite the conventionality of the two characters and distortions of the interior, the scene is quite understandable. The man sitting at the table is probably busy with his work – there are drawing instruments and a white sheet of paper in front of him. The role of the woman who has approached can be interpreted in two ways: either she brought something (perhaps some food on a dish), or she simply delves into the essence of a man’s activities. The canvas is harmonious in its colours, hot ocher and gray tones with spectacular bright yellow and delicate pink details.
