From the very beginning of his passion for Expressionism, Van den Berghe walked his own “Flemish” path. The painting shows a more humanistic approach to the topic, softer tones, attention and proximity to nature. The main difference was the absence of too sharp contrasts, very typical of the paintings of Berghe’s German colleagues, whom he met through the magazine “Das Kunstblatt”, where works of Erich Heckel, Ernst Kirchner and others were published. This picture has such symbols as a female torso and fish – they were permanent “participants” in the artist’s surrealistic canvases.
