The Idiot by the Pond

author

Frits van den Berghe

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent (Belgium).

The work with a rude title was created in the manner of primitivism using such painting techniques as large panels of bright, pure colours, clear outlines of the conditionally depicted objects and the figure of the main character. It seems that the artist did not care about the harmony of colour solutions – all the colours of the rainbow form the outskirts of the city with geese (or ducks) heading to the pond. A man standing in the water (or on its surface) is full of bewilderment and looks at the viewer with an unblinking and questioning look as if he does not know how he got here and what to do next.
