Black over Blue

author

Ellsworth Kelly

description

The Museum of Modern Art of San Francisco (the USA).

Painted aluminum.

Soon after returning from Paris, Kelly began to create works of a non-standard form instead of paintings from several colour panels. “Black over blue” is one of the most famous paintings by the artist in this series. Some part of the picture is above the rest of the surface, giving it a voluminous, sculptural form. The black element extends beyond the blue part of the canvas and visually makes the wall on which the work hangs a part of the composition. The work itself, the wall on which it is located and the rest of the space around it make up a whole composition and immerse the viewer into the work of art, making him a part of this composition.
