West Wind

author

Henry Spencer Moore

description

Mediums: рortland stone.
Location: The wall of the headquarters of London Underground Limited (the UK).

The sculpture, which is a bas-relief carved from limestone in the wall of the building, was Moore’s first public work. Initially, the artist did not agree to create a bas-relief, as he believed that the sculpture exists separately and should not be a part of the building, subject to architectural design. However, architect Charles Holden managed to convince Moore, and he carved a figure symbolizing the West wind, as deep in the wall of the building as possible. In this monumental figure, the influence of the ancient Aztec art is noticeable, especially the sculpture of Chakmula, which aroused the admiration of Moore in the Paris Museum.
