Four-Piece Composition: Reclining Figure

author

Henry Spencer Moore

description

Mediums: cumberland аlabaster.
Location: the Tate Gallery (London, the UK).

Instead of a traditional standing sculpture, Moore created a lying figure, divided into several parts. With their smooth, rounded lines, these fragments resemble organic forms, which at the same time are very familiar, but not correlated with any real object. The composition of the four figures demonstrates the enormous influence that Surrealism had on the sculptor in the early 1930s. At the same time, the brief forms and clear construction of lines indicate the influence of constructivism, the style in which B. Nicholson, a friend of Moore, worked. The combination of two opposite techniques is a feature of the sculptor’s creativity and makes his works original.
