The Dying Centaur

author

Antoine Bourdelle

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The Museum of Ingres, Montauban (France).

The work was ordered for Buenos Aires by the mayor of the city, who loved the small centaur sculpture he saw in the sculptor’s Paris studio. Work began in 1911, but there was a significant delay in casting in bronze due to World War I. The sculpture reached Argentina only in 1916 and was installed on the Piazza de la Recoleta. Another 1925 bronze copy is in Tuileries, Paris. The entire sculpture of the ancient mythical creature is made in an expressionistic manner; special attention is drawn to the tension of muscles in the upper part.
