description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: Place Prax Paris in Montauban (France).

Penelope’s sculpture is an example of how long it took for the artist from the pondering of the original idea to the final embodiment of the plan. The statue of the faithful wife of Odysseus was developed in 4 stages since 1905. In the initial version, she holds a spindle reminiscent of her method of numerous daring suitors. Smaller versions (about 1.2 m) can be seen in the Paris Petit Palais, in Lille, Amsterdam and Tokyo (Bridgestone Museum). The “height” of the completed monumental sculpture is 2.4 m. He exhibited his work with great success in the Paris Salon. It is presented in castings, apart from Paris, at the Dutch Museum Krollmuller de Otterlo and the Australian National Gallery of Canberra.
