Private house of Tange in the suburbs of Tokyo

author

Kenzō Tange

description

Traditional techniques of flexible living space are combined with a modern “open plan” approach organized around a compact core with service areas. The living quarters are located in a 2.4 m volume raised on poles. Light fusuma partitions divide the space in different ways. Tange used the traditions of Western functionalists. The floors are lined with tatami rice straw mats that form the building’s module.
