description

The complex is located on the site of the destroyed city center. The building of the memorial museum, its composition resembles ancient grain barns raised on pillars. This type of structure became the basis for the development of many buildings in Japan. The nodal core of the complex – a memorial monument with the world famous bell of Hiroshima – is a stylized sculptural image of the roof of a traditional Japanese hut – a haniwa. (At the foot of this symbolic sculpture is a capsule with the names of the victims, where new names are added every year). The simple modular volumes of the museum are linked to the monument of memory – a dramatic axis oriented towards the close epicenter of an atomic explosion, indicated by a ruin on the river bank – there is a bridge made in traditional forms; on the surface of it, the shadows of people who disappeared in the flame of a nuclear explosion are reflected.
