description

The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation (Bethany, Connecticut, the USA).

This is a painting of the series “Treble clef”, in which Albers first put into practice his theory of colour relations. He took the same image as a basis and filled it with various colours, sometimes contrasting, sometimes minimally different shades, almost merging. Thus, the artist tried to comprehend the ambivalence of linear geometry and to deduce the laws by which colour relations affected the shape of the object. Albers created several dozens of such works, differing only in colour and utterly identical in format and composition.
