Josef Albers

description

Mediums: zinc lithograpy.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art (New York, the USA).

In 1942, Albers began working on a series of lithographs called Graphic Tectonics, made in monochrome colours. Despite the fact that the artist is known for his experiments with colour, he created numerous interesting graphic paintings, in which he explored spatial relations and optical effects. Intersecting parallel lines and right angles create the illusion of volume, which makes the drawing similar to ancient temples of Native Americans, resembling pyramids. According to the author himself, he strove to get the “maximum effect from the minimum means”, using as simple designs as possible in his lithographs.
