Julian Schnabel

description

Mediums: оil, gesso and printed canvas on mounted canvas.
Location: the Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

In the 90s, Julian Schnabel stopped using ceramics in his works: the surface of his canvases became smooth, and the images became more simple and integral. In the untitled work, the artist used the collage method by placing an already finished black and white image in the central part of the canvas. This painting inside the painting occupies a small part of the space, and the rest of the surface is covered by a shapeless pinkish figure painted with large careless strokes of a thick, almost undiluted paint. The amorphous character seems to penetrate the small picture, envelop it from all sides and threaten its very existence. The combination of real and abstract components makes you think about the nature of people’s perception of the world around them.
