Georg Baselitz

description

Mediums: wood (linden), tempera.
Location: The Ludwig Museum of Modern Art, Cologne (Germany).

This is the first sculpture by Georg Baselitz, presented at the Venice Biennale in 1980. The author was inspired by primitive African figures. The composition is a rough, uncouth human figure with its hand raised. Some critics regarded this gesture as a Nazi salute, which was facilitated by the red and black colours used in the sculpture. The author himself never confirmed it; however, he did not refute this conjecture, letting the viewer decide what exactly he wanted to say in this composition.
