The work that is hard to be understood is a review of the events of the First World War. The city landscape (devastation, fire, mangled, derailed cars) is adjacent to the almost realistic (except for a black spot instead of one eye) portrait of a stern woman. She is the center of the composition visually and in meaning. The whole symbolic scene with torn spots of local colour (mostly alarming violet) and sharp fragments suggests how fragile the world is and how easy it is to turn peaceful life into chaos and grief.
