Three horses in Uglich

author

Konstantin Yuon

description

Mediums: watercolor, whitewash, paper.
Location: The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia).

The plot picture testifies to the artist’s passion for naive art. Having become an indifferent witness to the restoration discoveries in ancient Russian icon painting, when pure and bright colours were revealed to the world, Yuon reconsidered his views on his colouristic style. He used local planes in many of his paintings on topics close to festivals and fairs. Three horses – the favourite motive of Russian artists – are fabulous in the master’s art. The three horses of different colours, a bright wagon, happy riders and the noisy life around the town appear against the background of a conditionally drawn but certainly recognizable cathedral and other buildings with arches and multi-coloured roofs.
