August evening

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Simferopol Art Museum (Ukraine).

Unusual for the artist, who preferred bright and light colours, the picture tells of a warm evening when the light of a pink sunset no longer breaks into the garden. Tall trees (those that are commonly called centuries-old) seem to be black, but the gleams of the sun between the leaves are still golden, making them scarlet. Under this mysterious tent, the light of a green lamp on a round table seems to be cozy; some young people are sitting, reading and writing there. It is not difficult for the viewer to hear the sounds of evening cicadas, feel the warmth spilt both in the sky and under the lamp that illuminates not only the profiles of people but also a golden samovar.
