description

The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (Russia).

The sky, which occupies most of the plot landscape, the gold of the sacred domes and sunlight, highlighting every detail of the space – this is what the artist loved about Sergiyev Posad. As he succinctly defined, here is “everything that he sought” in nature, and also what he found in paintings by Serov and Levitan. He lived there for a long time and painted many different views. The panoramic landscape, which shows a view of the surroundings from the bell tower of the cathedral, presents the viewer with not only a clear summer evening, the sound of clean air dissected by many swallows, but also the joy of the world. He painted the spectacular motif symbolizing the historical and cultural role of the church when there was a struggle against religion. A year later, the master re-created the painting in watercolour.
