Ernst created this painting after the defeat of the Spanish Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. Its initial names were “The Angel of Hearth and Home” and “The Fireside Angel”. The artist depicted the chaos that was spreading over Europe and the ruins that fascism had brought to the world. In the figure of the mystical creature, immense force is expressed, against which people are helpless.
