The riddle of the hour

author

Giorgio de Chirico

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

Giorgio de Chirico’s creative personality manifested itself very early. In his works of the very beginning of the 1910s, his unique authorial style and vivid memorable images attract people’s attention. Among the artist’s first urban landscapes, “The Riddle of the Hour” stands out for its philosophical mood, a clear perspective and a deserted atmosphere – the features that formed the author’s “corporate” style over time. Arches and columns, as well as human figures frozen in the distance, will often appear on the artist’s canvases, excite the imagination and cause an unaccountable feeling of longing and anxiety. Due to this feature, the artist was close to the style of mizerabilizm.
