The Red Tower

author

Giorgio de Chirico

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The collection of Peggy Guggenheim (Venice, Italy).

The work is distinguished by the simplicity and restraint of forms characteristic of the author. The painting depicts very few objects: a round terracotta tower surrounded by smaller buildings, a bright blue sky, and a mysterious equestrian statue half hidden behind the building in the foreground. Along with arches and columns, the tower was a favorite object of the artist and appeared in many of his works. Illuminated by the mystical light of the setting sun, it plays the role of the main character of the canvas, and deep, almost black shadows emphasize the feeling of mystery.
