The phenomenon of weightlessness

author

Remedios Varo

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

In this painting, the artist’s desire for scientific research and craving for alchemical teachings and mysticism are apparent. The center of the composition is occupied by the scientist, who obviously after long search and attempts managed to achieve his goal – to find out the nature of weightlessness and create it in the attic of his own house. Remedios Varo used rich red shades to emphasize the importance of the moment and the strong emotions that gripped the person. The author depicted the room in a double perspective, as if the levitation phenomenon that had occurred somehow displaced the surrounding space.
