Embroidery of the Earth’s mantle

author

Remedios Varo

description

Mediums: masonite, oil.
Location: private collection.

The artist’s boundless fantasy placed embroiderers on the highest tower of the highest mountain. They are working attentively and intently under the guidance of a monk in a dark cassock with a mysteriously closed face. The girls make not clothes, but ground itself, its colourful and multifaceted shell, together with houses, trees and all creatures that inhabit it. The work reveals the idea of creating the world, or rather one of the possible options for its creation, and also the theme of female identity. Varo’s work tells about the role of women in a world led by men, where their little appreciated everyday work becomes the basis of the whole universe.
