The Mirror of Сronos

author

Roberto Sebastian Antonio Matta Echaurren

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: the MAVI Museum of Fine Arts (Santiago, Chile).

In his late paintings, Roberto Matta tried to brighten colour palette and used mythological and mystical plots. The multiple figure composition contains numerous humanoid creatures, many of which look like fairy-tale characters such as mermaids, centaurs and flying people-birds. These figures are not connected by any common action; they are looking in different directions, and each of them is doing his business. The only thing that unites the heroes of the painting is time depicted in the form of white and blue waves and spirals, symbolizing the eternal whirlpool of life and death in the Universe.
