In this work of his Parisian period, the artist compared various colours in random order, thus proving that their combinations create a certain atmosphere and mood depending on their location. Ellsworth Kelly drew inspiration in the outside world. During his walks in Paris, he noted a special shade of pavers on the sidewalks of the capital of France, the light of the sun during sunset, the sparkle of the Seine at different times of the day. The artist expressed all his impressions with the help of nine different shades, which he combined into one wall panel. In addition to the fact that each element of the work has a particular colour, it is located differently in space: one square protrudes more due to the thick layer of paint, and the other is smoother and flatter; this creates relief and depth in the composition.
