The Evil Eye

author

Enrico Donati

description

Mediums: mixed technique.
Location: The Museum of Fine Art (Philadelphia, the USA).

A fantastic eye existing separately from the body is placed on the glass stand with mirrors, in which its image is reflected many times. The composition was on the central place at the grand International exhibition of Surrealists in Paris, where it was placed in a separate room filled with strange and exotic objects created by Duchamp, Donati, Ernst, Matta, Miro and Tanguy. The unusual sculpture causes a terrible and anxious feeling of constant supervision, as if some otherworldly power put its evil eye on a man. The contemporaries of Donati thought that this eye symbolizes the government espionage and constant spying of people, although the artist himself did not put such a meaning into his work.
