The dream of Louis XIII

author

Felix Labisse

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Paris (France).

The second name of this painting is “The beautiful martyrdom”. The surrealistic plot reflects Louis’s interest in music (he played the lute and sang from the age of 3), dancing (he composed and performed parties in court ballets), writing (he was the author of courtly songs). The composition and color solutions resembling works of Salvador Dali are incredibly harmonious. Here is mature Labisse’s method of covering the head of the character with thin cloths, in the draperies of which the features of the face are guessed. The king’s dream was apparently visualized by an intricate pink object hovering over the open body of a naked woman.
