The city rises

author

Umberto Boccioni

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art (New York, the USA).

This exceptionally bright and expressive canvas is made in the technique of divisionism. Energetic elongated brushstrokes forming objects in the foreground emphasize the swiftness and dynamism of what is happening. In the center is an image of huge ferocious horses, frantic in their rapid movement. The animals symbolize the destructive power of the new time, which crushes human destinies. Powerful images of horses, which Boccioni often used in his works, became a kind of “evil rock” for the artist, as they caused his premature death.
