Riots in the gallery

author

Umberto Boccioni

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Pinacoteca Brera (Milan, Italy).

The author created this work before he started working in the style of futurism; however, the work clearly reflects the emerging trends in his art: increased interest in the problem of movement in painting and the desire to reflect strong human emotions. The atmosphere of restless chaotic movement in the painting is achieved due to elongated dynamic silhouettes going in different directions, reliably transmitting the nervous excitement of the crowd. Thanks to the subtle psychology of Umberto Boccioni, the picture is filled with lively energy, so it seems as if not only people in the gallery are moving, but everything that surrounds them: arches, walls, lamps and slanting shadows. People in the picture are depicted very schematically, but their gestures and poses are very easy to distinguish. Bright accents of yellow, red and orange colours enhance the emotional intensity of the scene.
