The Butcher Shop

author

Aleksei Morgunov

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: the Yaroslavl Regional Art Museum (Russia).

The painting refers to the first avant-garde period of the creative activity of A. Morgunov when he was interested in different styles, including neo-primitivism and fauvism. The plane frontally deployed composition has a domestic narrative plot. Figures of sellers and buyers, as well as objects, are depicted conditionally carelessly, but in compliance with the correct proportions. The lubok character is emphasized by the rosy cheeks of the characters, as well as a jumping dog in the foreground, which begs for a treat. A little earlier, the artist depicted three butcher men, one of whom puts a candle near the icon. At least five of his works with the same subject are known.
