Canadian War Factory

author

Percy Wyndham Lewis

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Tate Modern Gallery, London (the UK).

The only painting by the master dedicated to World War II depicts a Canadian factory that worked for the fronts. Born in Canadian Nova Scotia and serving during World War I as a military artist at the headquarters of the Canadian Corps, Lewis received an order for this plot painting. Later he explained, “There was a lot of smoke and little light”. The artist created a somewhat realistic painting (for which, by the way, he was not paid for some reason), introducing white colour spots for an additional light source and contrast of the hot space of the workshop.
