The Blacksmith

author

Victor Palmov

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The National Art Museum of Ukraine (Kyiv).

Following his idea of glorifying labor (as movement and action), Palmov depicted two male villagers at work. However, in this vertically built composition, the author is somewhat static, and the characters themselves, like epic heroes, seem to freeze in the process. The artist used his favorite colours – shades of brick red and deep blue, applied some elements of cubism. This mainly affects the background, the overall interior of the forge and objects. The faces of the characters, especially the elderly blacksmith, resemble iconographic faces.
