Table Piece LXXXVIII (The Deluge)

From the mid-1960s, Caro began to create small sculptures, which he combined in a series called “Table Piece”. In these works, the sculptor experimented on new forms in his art, much more complex and intricate compared to previous works and characterized by smooth, winding lines. These small sculptures are interesting because they do not have a flat base, but are located on a corner elevation as if hanging from a table or steps. The author defined these works as ordinary, “home” things, thus erasing the line between works of high art and everyday life. In addition, the “Table Piece” series contains allusions to world painting masterpieces; in particular, “The Deluge” is a three-dimensional interpretation of arabesques by Matisse.
