Swayambhu

author

Anish Kapoor

description

Mediums: wax, red pigment.

“Swayambhu” in Sanskrit means “self-educating”. The creation of this large wax composition, which was intended for the specific premises of the Haus der Kunst museum in Munich, required about 40 tons of the material. The location of the sculpture was not chosen by chance since this museum was created by Hitler; the railway and the blood-red object moving around it reminds of Jews sent to death in railway cars. The idea of Anish Kapoor is interesting because the size of the object is larger than the doorway through which it passes. This paradox creates an unrealistic feeling of curving space and unusually combines sculpture and architecture into a single art object.
