author

Esteban Francés

description

Mediums: gouache and pencil on paper.
Location: Private collection (New York, the USA).

One of the first works in the style of surrealism, in which there is a noticeable strong influence of the works of Salvador Dali and Giorgio de Chirico. A deserted space with figures frozen in it evokes a feeling of melancholy and hopelessness, and the frightening image of a girl who sews her foot on a sewing machine is very reminiscent of a nightmare. The dull and gloomy color palette of the painting with deep dark shadows in the foreground significantly aggravates the anxiety of the atmosphere. This work is completely unlike Frances’s subsequent bright works, it testifies to his creative searches and attempts to express his own worldview through the prism of Surrealism.
