Still life with letters. Spectrum of Flight

author

Jean Pougny

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia).

Briefly about the painting: The verbal basis of figurative decisions is obvious and easy to be noticed in this painting. Thus, in the word “flight”, the letters scatter randomly, as if in a panic, and the word “spectrum” on the surface of the canvas arises in the same way as the projection of the searchlight beam dynamically expands. The sensation of the length of the word “forms” is transmitted through the 5-time use of the “m”. The author presented this work at the personal exhibition at the Sturm gallery in Berlin in 1921, but Pougny could not take the original work from Russia; therefore he created the repetition changing the composition itself and its name.
