Still life No. 35

description

The Dallas Museum of Art (the USA).

Oil on canvas, collage.

Despite the fact that Tom Wesselmann denied that he was a representative of Pop art, this picture is an excellent example of this style. The still life depicts goods typical of America in the mid-20th century: white bread, a bottle of Coke, a can of stew, lemons and a pack of cigarettes. All the objects depicted in bright saturated colours of the palette seem artificial, even the lemons give the impression of fake, plastic toys. Outside the window of the room, the artist depicted an airliner going somewhere in a cloudless sky above the emerald sea surface. These perfect landscape and still life arouse a feeling of uneasiness as if a nice cover might conceal a not-so-joyful and carefree reality.
