Steamroller and the Rose

author

Óscar Domínguez

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Reina Sofia Art Center (Madrid, Spain).

Briefly about the painting:

The painting expresses the artist’s protest against the civil war in Spain, which brought violence and cruelty to his hometown, Tenerife. The vast ice rink, which is trying to crush a delicate rose, is a symbol of aggression and is defeated by a seemingly weak and defenseless plant. Working on this painting, Dominguez closely communicated with Surrealist poets Lautréamont and Breton and created illustrations for their works. This connection with the world of literature introduced special poetry, which was not characteristic of his art before, into his paintings.
