Spatial Concept (1968)

author

Lucio Fontana

description

Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (the USA).

Canvas, oil.

The late work of Fontana completed in the last year of his life is a completely white canvas, covered with thick pasty paint. In the middle of the canvas, the artist made a hole that has torn edges also densely covered with white pigment and turned outward. Thin black stripes outline the hole in a circle, making it look like a target with a hole from a bullet in the middle. The composition created in a careless and even rude manner is a primitive creative act that releases intense energy and inspires many associations; most often these are unconscious feelings of anxiety and fear.
