South of Scranton

author

Peter Blume

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (the USA).

Briefly about the painting:

The plot was based, according to the author, on the impressions of the car trip, which he made through the eastern states. However, the picture is dominated by a tower with platforms and a ladder to nowhere – a reference to the structures of the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach. Almost the same young people making incredibly high jumps gather around him, Blume explained; they are German sailors whom he saw in South Carolina. From the explanations it becomes clear that Blume mostly created his works basing on his personal observations, combining many places and times in one canvas. The painting won the first prize at the Carnegie International Show in Pittsburgh.
