Self-portrait with seven fingers

author

Marc Chagall

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Stedelek Museum, Amsterdam (Netherlands).

Experts consider the canvas to be paired to the picture for “I and a village.” The author depicted a dandy-artist, a successful creator: an elegant and fashionable suit with a flower on the lapel, a well-groomed appearance. In front of the character is one of the best works, “Russia, Donkeys and Others”, and Paris in the window. He writes “with seven fingers”, which in the Hebrew proverb means “very fast” (also a hint of the seven days of creation). The viewer can see the idea born in the imagination of the painter – he is in a cloud with the recognizable Vitebsk Orthodox Church. Both worlds are precious for him, as the words in Hebrew confirm: Paris is on the left part of the wall, while Russia is on the right one. The work is created in a cubo-futuristic manner, and the influence of Delphi Orphism is obvious.
