Paris from the window

author

Марк Шагал

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: State Museum of Modern Art, Paris, (France).

The canvas was created during the first stay of Chagall in France. The capital impressed the artist with the Eiffel Tower, not as the personification of technical achievements, but as the symbol of the new Tower of Babel. In the picture, the multi-coloured skies are emphasized by the window frame resembling a staircase. This is how the dualism and unity of the world, the central theme of the work, are shown. There is everything in the world – flowers and cats (animal world), love and the possibility of flying. All this, like in the two-faced Janus, is in one person.
