Marie Toyen (Maria Cerminova)

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

One of the most mysterious and impressive paintings by Maria Toyen, created in the late period of her creative career; it combines traits of symbolism and surrealism. The distinguishing feature of the artist is the ability to depict a person when they immerse in themselves, their visions, though, not understanding their specific meaning. Some details — a white butterfly (an image often used by Toyen), green gloves and a shade on the wall are quite readable. At the same time, it is impossible to combine everything depicted in any plot. In the painting, there is one more specialty of her late canvases – the blurriness of the outlines of the silhouettes and the presence of the motive of the mirror and the shadow.
